Buccaneer Learning: Stories, Reports, Examples

Here is where I will post learning stories and commentary. A learning story is a blow-by-blow account of a learning process, including obstacles encountered along the way. Additionally, there are different sorts of reports and artifacts I may find useful to post.

DocumentAn Example Technical ReportOne Christmas dinner, I was working with Chris Ojaste, a teenager who is learning how to think like an engineer. As we were trying to enjoy our lasagna, the cheese grater broke, and we fixed it. To show Chris how to write a technical report, I wrote a report of the cheesegrater incident and included a commentary on how to write reports. I recommend reading this if you are unsure about what goes into writing a report about a technical investigation.<p>This is also an example of how any experience can be a learning experience.
DocumentLearning By BuildingBrandon Ojaste, 18, wanted a new computer for gaming but couldn't afford one. So, he decided to build one from parts to save money. I asked him to write a blow-by-blow story of what problems he encountered and what he learned along the way. Then I walked through the report and tutored him in the art of report writing at the same time. This is an example of a work product that anyone can create as part of developing their portfolio. It demonstrates to a potential employer that they are serious learners and worth hiring.
DocumentErwin Van Trier's Puzzle JourneyErwin Van Trier attempted to solve a Trey Klein puzzle that I posted on my blog, and provides this detailed point-by-point description of how he solved it, including all his frustrations and false starts. That's buccaneering, baby!
